  • Awards for Hawai‘i Memoir Writing Guide and Brother Noland’s Wilderness Handbook

    9781935690535Watermark Publishing has swept the Special Interest Books category and received further recognition in the Design category at the Hawai‘i Book Publishers Association’s 2015 Ka Palapala Po‘okela Awards. Honors were given to Writing the Hawai‘i Memoir: Advice and Exercises to Help You Tell Your Story by Darien Gee (Award of Excellence, Special Interest) and The Hawaiian Survival Handbook by Brother Noland, illustrated by Andrew J. Catanzariti and designed by Jen Tadaki Catanzariti (Honorable Mentions, Special Interest and Design). The awards, which recognize the best local books published during the previous calendar year, were announced at ceremonies held on Thursday, April 23, 2015 at the East-West Center.

    “What an amazing gift it would be for the Hawaiian Islands and the rest of the world if more people started to write down what might otherwise be lost,” the competition’s judges observed in their comments regarding top award honoree Writing the Hawai‘i Memoir. “It’s a daunting task to actually sit down and know where to begin. Darien Gee has solved this problem. [This] book takes you through the process step by step…it takes the stress out of where to start and how to start. The format of Writing the Hawai‘i Memoir is inspiring in itself, creative and original in its design.”

    Gee is a nationally best-selling author with six novels to her credit. A resident of Waimea on the island of Hawai‘i, she continues to write fiction (also under the pen name Mia King) and teaches writing and publishing workshops.

    SurvivalHandbook_webThe judges praised Brother Noland’s The Hawaiian Survival Handbook as “a guide like no other, not just because it includes plants, animals and scenarios specific to Hawai‘i, but because it considers the culture and customs of the people that live here. This valuable collection of knowledge is a unique addition to the typical guidebooks about our islands.” In the Design category, the Survival Handbook was acknowledged “a very close second to the winner. Fresh and unique…its compact size, black-and-white illustrations and gently distressed cloth cover perfectly complement the subject matter. The judges also enjoyed the endlessly amusing titles such as, ‘How to Deal with Eels.’”

    Brother Noland is an accomplished Hawaiian musician and lifelong outdoorsman. He offers traditional Hawaiian tracking and outdoor skills workshops and camps for adults and children through his Ho‘ea Initiative program. The Hawaiian Survival Handbook is his second book to be recognized by the Hawai‘i Book Publishers Association; The Lessons of Aloha: Stories of the Human Spirit, also from Watermark Publishing, was honored in the Nonfiction category in 2006. Husband-and-wife illustration-design team Andrew Catanzariti and Jen Tadaki Catanzariti have also collaborated on a Watermark Publishing children’s book, Wordsworth! Stop the Bulldozer!

  • Hawai‘i Book Publishers Association Names From Kau Kau to Cuisine Islands’ Best Cookbook

    Watermark Publishing has received the Award of Excellence, the top honor, in the Cookbooks category of the annual Hawai‘i Book Publishers Association’s Ka Palapala Po‘okela Awards. The winning book is From Kau Kau to Cuisine: An Island Cookbook, Then and Now by food historian Arnold Hiura, featuring traditional and contemporary recipes by Derek Kurisu of KTA SuperStores and Jason Takemura of Pagoda Floating Restaurant and Hukilau Honolulu. The awards were announced at ceremonies held on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at the East-West Center.

    The competition’s judges praised From Kau Kau to Cuisine for connecting Hawai‘i’s past and present through side-by-side pairings of plantation-era and modern-day dishes. Author Arnold Hiura, they said, “masterfully ties these recipes together with interesting histories on Hawai‘i’s culinary evolution and illustrates how trends in modern cuisine—sustainable, foraged, nose-to-tail eating—are actually old practices that were adopted out of necessity in plantation and war-era Hawai’i. Sharing food is joyful, and From Kau Kau to Cuisine is a joy to read and share.”

    From Kau Kau to Cuisine: An Island Cookbook, Then and Now is Arnold’s fourth book with Watermark Publishing. His two previous cookbooks, Kau Kau: Cuisine and Culture in the Hawaiian Islands and The Blue Tomato: The Inspirations Behind the Cuisine of Alan Wong, co-written with Chef Alan Wong, were also recipients of the Ka Palapala Po‘okela Award of Excellence in Cookbooks.

    This marks the sixth consecutive year that a Watermark Publishing title has received the Award of Excellence in Cookbooks. In addition to Arnold’s books, previous years’ recipients were A Splash of Aloha: A Healthy Guide to Fresh Island Seafood (2013) and A Sweet Dash of Aloha: Guilt Free Hawai‘i Desserts and Snacks (2012), both by Kapi‘olani Community College, and The Island Bistro Cookbook by Chef Chai Chaowasaree (2009).

    In addition to Watermark Publishing’s own award, two clients from our Legacy Isle Publishing division also received honors. HONOLULU Magazine and Paradise of the Pacific: 125 Years of Covers by A. Kam Napier, Kristin Lipman, Michael Keany and Erik Ries, released under the Legacy Isle imprint, was presented with the Award of Excellence in the Illustrative/Photographic Books category. WCIT Architecture received Honorable Mentions for ‘A‘ama Nui: Guardian Warrior Chief of Lalakea, released under WCIT’s Mo‘o Studio imprint, in both the Children’s Hawaiian Culture and Children’s Literature categories. These are the first Ka Palapala Po‘okela wins for Legacy Isle clients. Legacy Isle Publishing provides publishing services to clients interested in producing non-fiction or children’s books specifically for the Hawai‘i market.

  • Watermark Publishing Sweeps Hawai‘i Book Publishers Association Cookbook Awards Category

    The annual Hawai‘i Book Publishers Association’s Ka Palapala Po‘okela Awards were announced Friday, May 11, 2012. Watermark Publishing’s nominees in the Cookbook category, A Sweet Dash of Aloha: Guilt-Free Hawai‘i Desserts & Snacks by Kapi‘olani Community College and The Hawai‘i Book of Rice: Tales, Trivia & 101 Great Recipes by Cheryl Chee Tsutsumi, swept the category, taking the top Award of Excellence and the Honorable Mention award, respectively.

    The judges praised A Sweet Dash of Alohafor its departure from the norm in Island cookbooks, saying,

    So many locally published cookbooks are mishmash collections of ‘local food’ recipes. A Sweet Dash of Aloha is a refreshing well-focused, well-written cookbook that offers a new angle on local flavors and ingredients, combining simplicity and clarity with a sophisticated understanding of food, nutrition and health.

    The Hawai‘i Book of Rice received compliments for its comprehensive coverage of the Aloha State’s favorite grain:

    Tsutsumi has compiled a collection of dishes that reflect local tastes while exploring new and creative uses of rice. With its recipes for salads, appetizers, entrées and desserts, The Hawaii Book of Rice is certainly versatile. The book’s chapter on the history of rice in Hawai‘i is a well-researched, delightful introduction to the recipes and offers a solid backdrop for the social and economic importance of this local staple.

    This marks the fourth consecutive year that a Watermark Publishing title has received the Award of Excellence in Cookbooks. Last year’s Award of Excellence went to The Blue Tomato: The Inspirations Behind the Cuisine of Alan Wong by Chef Alan Wong and Arnold Hiura.     Don’t Look Back: Hawaiian Myths Made New edited by Christine Thomas; Kapoho: Memoir of a Modern Pompeii by Frances Kakugawa; and The Cocktail Handbook: Cool Drinks from Hawai‘i’s Hottest Bartenders by Jesse Greenleaf and Amie Fujiwara were also nominated in other Ka Palapala Po‘okela categories, but did not take home awards.
