    From Nov. 14 through 20, Ala Moana Center will be serving up a ton of special dining promotions and pricing for the Fourth Annual Restaurant Week Hawai‘i, a weeklong celebration of cuisine in the Islands. Diners will enjoy special menu items and a variety of delicious regional dishes made using locally grown farm-to-table produce. Participating Ala Moana Center restaurants include everyone from fine dining eateries such as The Pineapple Room, Mariposa and Morton’s the Steakhouse, to casually chic spots the likes of Blue Hawai‘i Lifestyle and Longhi’s, and fast food favorites such as McDonalds.

    Get a FREE copy of The Hawai‘i Book of Rice by dining* at any two different participating Ala Moana Center restaurants from Nov. 14 to 20, 2011, and presenting your receipts during the same time period at the Customer Service Center. Limit one per person, while supplies last.   • Happy OctoBEER!

    October means Oktoberfest, which means people everywhere are celebrating beer. The Hawaii Beer Book: Bars, Breweries & Beer Cuisine has everything you need to celebrate in beery fine fashion, whether you'd prefer to brew up your own batch of suds at home, go out for a pint, or cook with your beer instead of drinking it.

    It’s still pretty hot here in the Islands, but this hearty soup (right), one of the recipes featured in the book, is just something we can’t beer to pass up sharing. (For recipe, see below.)

    And maybe it’s the beer in the air, but we’re feeling in a mood to give away some prizes! Tell us where you stand on cooking with beer: “Sacrilege!     Bread Soup with Dark Beer and Cheese

    3 slices bacon, finely diced
    1 onion, finely diced
    4 slices rye bread, medium diced
    1½ c. dark beer of your choice, preferably German
    2 bay leaves
    12 c. chicken stock
    1 Tbsp. Dijon mustard
    1 tsp. roux (butter-flour mixture)
    2 c. sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
    Salt and pepper to taste

    Cook bacon over low heat in a stainless steel pot. Add onion and bread. Sauté until brown. Add beer, bay leaves and chicken stock, and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes. Add roux and bring back to a boil. Remove from heat and add mustard, cheese and seasonings. Serve hot in a deep bowl and garnish with a dollop of sour cream and snipped chives. Serves 6.

  • Chef Alan Wong Cooking Demo at Williams-Sonoma

    Chef Alan Wong will conduct a culinary technique demonstration, drawing from dishes in his newest cookbook, The Blue Tomato: The Inspirations Behind the Cuisine of Alan Wong, on Saturday, October 8 at the Williams-Sonoma store at Ala Moana Center. Chef Alan will discuss culinary principles from The Blue Tomato and demonstrate various techniques utilized in his recipes. The demonstration will last approximately 40 minutes and will be followed immediately by a book signing session; copies of The Blue Tomato will be available for purchase at Williams-Sonoma.
