The Warrior Writer (Girl from Kapoho)
Hear how a little girl from Kapoho fought her way through culture, gender, and a live volcano to become a voice in the world as a warrior writer. Author Frances H. Kakugawa will share stories from her childhood that made an impact on her life and will read from her published works, including her most recent books on caregiving and the elderly, Mosaic Moon and Wordsworth Dances the Waltz. She will also read some new and unreleased poetry.
Frances Kakugawa is a retired Hawai‘i educator. Originally from the Big Island, she taught for many years in the Hawai‘i public school system, as well as serving as a teacher trainer and curriculum writer/lecturer for the University of Hawai‘i and the State Dept. of Education. Through her workshops and speaking engagements, she is a leading advocate of the power of poetry to enrich the lives of children, the elderly and those who care for them.
