Honolulu Stadium: Where Hawai‘i Played Relives the Glory Days of Island Sports

Honolulu Stadium: Where Hawaii Played celebrates the golden era of Hawai‘i athletics, a time when Honolulu was young and sport was king. During its historic half-century from 1926 to 1976, the landmark Honolulu Stadium on King and Isenberg Streets was the entertainment center of the community, hosting high school football, Hawaii Islanders baseball, the Hula Bowl, stock car racing, boxing matches, ethnic baseball leagues, sports heroes from Babe Ruth to Joe Louis, and big name entertainers from Irving Berlin to Elvis Presley.

A smash best-seller when first published in hardcover in 1995, and now released in softcover, Honolulu Stadium: Where Hawaii Played includes hundreds of historic photos and rare memorabilia, as well as the priceless memories of athletes, coaches, fans and many others. With a foreword by ABC-TV sportscaster Al Michaels, who once called ballgames there, the book presents the definitive story of Honolulu Stadium—a classic American ballpark and the heart and soul of a community.

Author Arthur Suehiro recalls the Stadium’s glory days with fondness. Passionate about Hawai‘i nostalgia and baseball history in particular, Suehiro spent countless hours combing through archival material and conducting interviews for the book. Besides being an amateur historian, he is an executive with First Hawaiian Bank and a member of the Hawai‘i Sports Hall of Fame Executive Committee. Honolulu Stadium is a past Hawai‘i Book Publishers Association award winner for excellence in nonfiction writing.
